Taking the Mickey

An early start from San Diego saw us barrelling down the I-5 interstate towards Disneyland this morning.

Despite horrendously large traffic volumes, Californian freeways generally move pretty well. I'm continually amazed that the overwhelming majority of cars have just one occupant. In a move to encourage better vehicle utilisation, the State has instituted a system of HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lanes. These are freeway lanes specifically reserved for cars that have two or more occupants, with hefty fines for violators. Because so many cars are driver only, this means that a family can whizz around the freeways almost unimpeded even in peak hours.

As it is the final couple of days of our holiday, we have checked into a Holiday Inn near Anaheim to enjoy a bit of hotel chain luxury prior to a long flight home. It is large, impersonal and predictable - sort of nice after the chaos of Mexico.

Disneyland. It's every kid's dream, and with just cause. From the grand entrance to the rides and culminating in the fireworks spectacular - this is kid adrenaline at its best. Rory and Indi traipsed miles and miles, enjoying rides, playgrounds and other attractions. Some of them are high tech 7D immersive experiences, whereas others are just normal kid's fun done on a grand scale (think four story high tree house the size of a modest apartment block).

Starting at 10am, the kids partied hard all day and were still on deck to see the closing fireworks at 8pm. It was a desperately tired pair of munchkins that were eventually poured into bed at 10:30pm.
