Baywatch and outlet stores

After a huge crepe breakfast, we meandered up Santa Monica's 3rd Ave promenade, enjoying the musicians and sampling various stores. A quick left at the end of the promenade took us down to the beach; just like a scene from the Baywatch television series except everyone was four times the size.

The beach walk hugs the coastline around to the Santa Monica Pier, one of Los Angeles most iconic landmarks.

The kids had a wonderful time looking at the street vendors and performers, with the smell of freshly sawn oak the only evidence of the major fire on the pier a few years ago.

Having enjoyed a relaxing morning, we settled in for the longest drive of the trip - six hours through to San Francisco via the I-105 freeway.

After navigating some incredibly complicated freeway interchanges, we spotted the sign for Mulholland Drive. Jo was keen to see Belair and the movie star houses, so we circuited Mulholland and admired the scenery.

Another couple of hours of freeway surfing yielded a signpost pointing to an outlet strip. A quick detour saw Jo having shopgasms, with all of the major global brands present and offering discounts up to 70%. It's just as well we are driving a large SUV, because the luggage space is now officially full.

Three more hours driving finally brought the lights of San Francisco into view, and it was tired Fridays that crossed the bay bridge and set about looking for a place to rest. Three hotels later, collapse.
