Alamo Car Rental have a shuttle bus between the airport and the rental yard. Within 15 minutes of leaving the airport, we had signed the paperwork and were in the yard to pickup a vehicle. Jo did not understand the process of just choosing any vehicle and then driving it to the gate - so while she was debating the process, all of the really nice SUVs were making their way out of the car park. We have consequently ended up driving a Nissan Murano - nice, but not exactly the epitome of American culture.
And so to the Liberty Hotel in Hollywood. It was an uneventful drive (albeit on the wrong side of the road) and we pulled into the hotel's street without incident. The 'incidents' began when we glanced at the hotel entrance and noted that it looked like a construction zone. As it turns out - I was a construction zone. The hotel is currently undergoing a full renovation, but this has not prevented them from keeping the doors open to the public. With dust an inch deep, walls open to the street, and a checkin counter in a hallway; this was a complete mess. We had to tramp around to the back of the hotel amidst the dumpsters to find the temporary entrance up a flight of chipped concrete steps.
The concierge (read: guy in jeans who says 'dude' every third word) assured us that the rooms had been fully renovated, despite the disgraceful state of the public areas. Indeed, he proudly showed us a room that was ready for occupancy. It was complete with black sheets, towels, and doona covers, mirrored walls, and red mood lighting. Despite the less-than-salubrious surroundings, we were exhausted and soon in bed.
